Trim Your Wick (Every Time)

Keep your wooden wick trimmed to 1/4 inch before each burn for optimal flame and scent throw.

Why It Matters

An untrimmed wick can self-extinguish or burn too high. If your flame is too high (over 1 in), your wick is likely too long or the candle is in a draft. Extinguish, allow the wax to fully solidify, trim the wick and relight.

Practice Safe Candle Burning

  • Always trim to 1/4 inch before lighting
  • Allow wax to pool completely across the surface on first use to prevent tunneling.   
  • Burn candle for 2-4 hrs at a time, NEVER more than 4 hrs
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended or use as a nightlight
  • Let the wax fully solidify and allow the vessel to cool before relighting
  • Keep away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and open windows
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Place on a level, heat-resistant surface
  • Keep away from clothing, paper, curtains and anything flammable
  • Stop using when the silver wick clip is visible or 1/2 in of wax remains

The Melt Pool 

For best results, when you burn your candle for the first time, let the melted wax nearly reach the edges of the vessel - usually 2-4hrs. With coconut-soy wax, a full melt pool may not appear until you're halfway through the candle's life. This is normal and often self-corrects contributing to a longer, cleaner burn.

Never Burn Your Candle Longer Than 4 Hours

Burning your candle longer than 4 hours keeps your candle from performing at its peak. Longer burns can overheat the vessel, dull the fragrance and create unsafe conditions.

Repurpose Your Vessel

When 1/2 inch of wax remains or the silver wick clip is showing, your candle has reached the end of it's life. 

To clean: Pour hot water into the vessel and let cool so the remaining wax floats, hardens and then remove. Repeat this step if necessary. Another method to remove wax is to place the vessel in the freezer overnight. Once the wax is frozen through, flip the vessel upside down, give a firm pat with an open palm and the wax should fall out cleanly in one piece. Wash with mild dish soap, wipe with paper towel and let dry. If you remove the label and there is a sticky, adhesive residue, using a cotton pad soaked in a little isopropyl alcohol or an adhesive remover can help.

  • Store cotton balls, cotton swabs, hair ties, etc.
  • Plant pots
  • Pen/pencil holder
  • Makeup brush holder
  • Display flowers
  • Store small pantry staples
  • Pour your own candle

A Note About Our Candles

Every Madison Candle Co. candle is hand-poured in small batches using a premium coconut-soy wax blend. Because natural wax expands and contracts with changes in temperature, you may occasionally notice slight variations in the surface or areas where the wax has pulled away from the sides after cooling. These characteristics are purely cosmetic and do not affect the quality, safety, burn performance or fragrance of your candle. Each candle is carefully inspected before it leaves our studio to ensure it meets our standards for craftsmanship and performance. Just as no two hand-poured candles are exactly alike, these subtle variations are part of what makes each piece uniquely yours.
